The Founder
Dr. Ying Zhang is the visionary founder and president of the Spotlight Arts and Culture Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting artistic excellence and cultural connection through music, education, and performance. A Kawai Medallion Educator and one of Houston’s most sought-after piano teachers, Dr. Zhang operates a top-tier private piano school where hundreds of students receive professional training through her successful, individualized program.

Originally from China and now proudly based in the U.S., Dr. Zhang received full scholarships to study at some of the most prestigious music institutions in the country. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Rice University, a Master of Music degree from Indiana University – Bloomington, and a Bachelor of Music degree from Oberlin Conservatory. Prior to dedicating herself to music education and arts leadership, she performed extensively as a soloist across the U.S., appearing on distinguished stages such as the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, SUNY New Paltz, and the Las Vegas International Summer Music Festival.

As an Asian-American woman who has experienced both Eastern and Western cultural landscapes, Dr. Zhang is passionate about giving back by mentoring young musicians and creating transformative opportunities for the next generation of artists. Under her leadership, the Spotlight Arts and Culture Foundation has launched globally recognized initiatives such as the Spotlight International Piano Competition and the Triumph of the Keys concert series—programs that celebrate diversity, elevate talent, and bring communities together through the power of music.
